2022 Star Breaking News Report of the Year

Temple Daily Telegram staffers Eric Garcia and Christian Betancourt discussed their work on this year’s Charles E. Green Award for Star Breaking News Report of the Year, “Bell County Tornado.”

In April 2022, a tornado struck the Salado area, damaging homes as hail pelted Belton, Temple, and Killeen. The team at the Temple Daily Telegram was monitoring the weather news reports when things changed very quickly, Garcia said. He credits social media, calls to various agencies, and a good relationship with the Bell County Sheriff’s Office for how the news team extensively covered damage in the area.
