Policy for Professional Excellence Programs with Cash Awards
In 1983, the Headliners Foundation of Texas was formed to formalize the Headliners Club’s awards program into an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in journalism. In addition to awarding scholarships for promising students, the Headliners Foundation recognizes media talent and sponsors unique journalism projects.
Each year the Headliners Foundation of Texas recognizes the best of Texas journalism through its Charles E. Green Awards and Showcase Awards for Enterprise and Innovation. Winners of these awards are recognized at the annual Mike Quinn Awards luncheon, and each receives a cash prize to accompany their distinction as a Foundation award winner.
The Foundation believes it essential to reward journalists directly for their work and has adopted a policy to ensure funds go to individuals rather than to media outlets:
“It is the policy of the Headliners Foundation of Texas that cash funds to journalists for their award-winning work be made payable to an individual or, when a team produced the entry, each of the key members (maximum 5). In the event a media outlet disallows such payment, the award funds will not be distributed and will instead be utilized by the Foundation to fund journalism education. Award winners will still receive non-monetary recognition from the Foundation.”
