Data Crunching, Great Reporting Get Under the Hood of “The Texas Miracle”

The Texas Tribune assigned reporter Jay Root to take the lead on an in-depth story of the performance of Texas’ Workers’ Compensation program, charged with protecting the State’s workforce with affordable insurance against workplace injuries.  The resulting discovery and publication of multiple shortfalls in the system led to changes and reversals in policies and practices that were working to deny rightful claims.

The Tribune’s report, “Hurting for Work,” won a Silver Award in this year’s Showcase Award competition.  Foundation Chairman Mark Morrison interviews Jay Root about how the story developed.
