In Heartbreak & Hope, American-Statesman features writer and travel editor Kristin Finan tells the story of an important part of her life — how befriending a neighborhood kid who was a foster child would lead her on a journey to become an adoptive parent. It is a journey of heartbreak and hope that plays out in four parts over the course of this series, which ran on consecutive weeks in the American-Statesman. Readers were moved to tears, and some told us they were moved to action. The series wasn’t just an emotional read; it was also an informative and instructive glimpse into what it’s like to go through the foster and adoption systems in Texas.
