Meth: The Prison Pipeline is an investigative series that reveals the human impact of federal meth sentencing guidelines. The investigation compiled, filtered and analyzed 10 years worth of sentencing data to show that meth sentences in the Northern District of Texas are harsher than anywhere else in the US. First-time non-violent offenders are receiving decades-long sentences -- on average even longer than sentences for such violent crimes as rape. We expose how this has a particularly disproportionate effect on Latinos in Northern Texas. Following publication, the US Sentencing Commission announced recommendations that will change meth sentencing guidelines for the first time. That process is ongoing.
